History of Nigeria

Nigeria gained independence from United Kingdom , on 1 st of October 1960. New republic government incorporated number of peoples with the aspiration of their sovereign nations. Imbalance was created in policy by the past result of 1961 plebiscite. A southern Cameroon was opted to join Republic of the Cameroon while part of northern Cameron chose and remain in country. Northern part of country was far larger than southern Republic. Nation parted with British legacy in year 1963, and declaring itself as Federal Republic .

 
 

In 1965, when elections came, AG was outmaneuvered in control of the Nigeria 's region by Nigerian Democratic National Party.

During oil boom of 1970s, Nigerian's joined OPEC and about billion of dollars generated making production in oil-rich Delta flowed into coffers of Nigerian state. Increase in graft and corruption at different levels government squandered these earnings. Northern military benefited from oil boom to detriment of Nigerian economy and people.

 

Oil revenues fuelled rise of the federal subventions to the states and then precariously to the individuals, federal Government has soon became center of the political struggle and center became threshold. As production of oil rose in country, government created dangerous situation and it became dependent on the oil reserves.

In beginning of 1979, peoples of Nigeria participated in brief return to the democracy when it was transferred to civilian regime of the Shehu Shagari. Government of Shagari viewed as a corrupt as well as incompetent virtually in all sectors of the Nigerian society.

 

When regime was over thrown, military coup of the Mohammadu Buharii was shortly after development by population. Country has now achieved the democracy in year 1999 when elected Olusegun Obasanjo. Election that brought the Obasanjo in power in year 1999, again in year 2003 were condemned as unfair and unfree, country has shown and marked some improvements in attempts to the willingness to a fight the happening corruption in country.
